Recently, Governor Newsom heeded concerns of educators, workers, parents, and students across California with guidelines establishing which counties could physically reopen schools and how they should go about doing so. It’s a hard decision, but the increase in community spread of COVID has made it clear:

California cannot reopen schools until it is safe.

This a fair, well-thought-out start to address an issue that has been dangerously politicized for Donald Trump’s gain. Pediatricians are telling the White House schools need resources to ensure safety. We cannot ignore science, facts, and common sense safety.

I have two young children, one in elementary school. I am frustrated at the situation that the federal government has placed families in as we try to balance work, childcare, and the enrichment of our students. I’m listening to our PTAs who overwhelmingly understand the circumstances, and are asking for solutions to support our children. It isn’t easy, but it shouldn’t be this hard.

We must work with our communities to ensure California’s children will receive an education while we do all we can to keep our teachers, staff & students safe.

When I announced my run for the California State Assembly, I was adamant that education be one of our top legislative priorities. And through many interviews, I am grateful to have earned the endorsement of the California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers, California School Employees Association and many more.

COVID-19 has strengthened my resolve to fight for our students now.

Distance learning hasn’t been easy for my daughter or any of our neighbors. While it’s the prudent option, when our public health data suggests better control of COVID spread, we must be ready to have healthy physical school environments.

Join me in calling on state legislators to:

  • Secure additional revenues so we can properly fund our public schools,

  • Ensure access to PPE,

  • Establish health and safety protocols for all schools,

  • Provide equity in support for at-risk students,

  • Support school enhancements for ventilation and cleaning supplies,

  • and help California families make it through this crisis.
